The Hands Behind The Press

Hi! I’m Julie, and I am the founder, artist, and printmaker behind Zephyr Paper Co.

As a Hmong-American woman, storytelling is etched into my history. Long before I ever felt the heavy iron of a printing press, I watched the women in my family practice paj ntaub, the intricate art of Hmong storycloth embroidery. I watched them use a single needle, vibrant thread, and quiet determination to sew our history, our survival, and our dreams into fabric when our words were stripped away. They taught me that art is not merely decoration; it is a sacred archive. It is how we ensure our stories live on.

Today, my medium is paper and ink, but the heartbeat is exactly the same.

Thank you for letting my hands build a home for the stories and connections you cherish.

When I am not covered in grey ink or at the press, you can usually find me slowing down at home tending to my family, drafting digital clothing patterns, or finding a quiet escape in video games.

I run Zephyr Paper Co. from a place of deep gratitude, and I am so honored to share a piece of my history with you.

With care and intention,
Julie

Philosophy & Purpose

I believe in art that moves. Art that serves as a quiet, steady reminder of our shared humanity.

My work is anchored by four distinct pillars: womanhood, healing, cultural roots, and social justice. These themes consistently find their way to the press because they are deeply personal to me, and I know I am not navigating them alone.

My purpose is to create art that makes you feel seen, heard, and profoundly known. In a hurried world, I craft letterpress stationery and art prints to serve as tangible anchors for intentional connection. Inviting us to slow down, lean into our shared history, and hold space for one another.

The Art of Deep Impression

Letterpress is a traditional relief printing technique that functions much like a highly precise stamp. Rather than sitting on the surface, ink is pressed deep into thick, pillowy cotton paper using hand-set type or polymer plates. This leaves behind a crisp indentation you can feel beneath your fingertips.

The Labor Behind the Luxury

While the press itself is a marvel of vintage engineering, the true magic lies in the quiet, meticulous preparation. Every design begins as a digital sketch before being translated onto a custom printing plate. From there, ink is mixed entirely by hand to match precise color formulas, and each sheet of premium cotton paper is hand-fed into the vintage Vandercook press, one single sheet at a time.

It is a slow, deliberate dance of pressure, ink, and hyper-precision. This dedication to the old ways is what gives every piece its soulful, heirloom quality.
